It also takes a special kind of fearlessness to bring up the things that trouble us and make us blush, admitting that we've made complete fools of ourselves over those things innumerable times.
But so what? Good columns or essays aren't about wallowing in our mistakes; it's about admitting them, and then appreciating what we've learned from them. He does that over and over, sometimes with honesty that burns through to the bone and sometimes with a wink and an aside that makes us laugh out loud. My personal favorite is when he is asked if he's ever had the urge to wallop one of his kids. He says, "Oooh, baby."
